Great Value for a Quality Tv Set...(and it's pretty too)

by Kevin M. Tan 2009-10-22, 10 people found this review helpful
Panasonic makes great video products. I currently have this tv and the BD80 Blu-ray player, which is one of the best on the market (definitely in its price point). This tv is a solid and well built set. Design-wise, It lacks the flash of the Samsungs, but has a very elegant and refined appearance (not kitchy like Samsung). The biggest 'determiner' in obtaining a great picture on this tv is contingent upon a couple of things. It is in fact a full 1080p, but one needs to spend some time with the picture adjustments. Also, a Blu-ray player is a must; otherwise, with the exception of a few HD channels, you will not actually 'see' 1080p resolution. Once you have a good Blu-ray player (the Panasonic(s) are the best!) you need to make your picture tweeks and adjustments while watching some Blu-rays--particularly ones you've seen, so that you know how the images and colors should look (somewhat). What you need to do, is leverage the picture/video adjustments from BOTH your tv AND your Blu-ray player (most people do not do this!). It is best to utilize the 'black' and 'darker' prompts when choosing between 'lighter' and 'darker'. Remember dark blacks is what you are after. Also, turn your backlight down to about half way--then adjust your sharpness and contrast from there (sharpness should be dialed down to about 30--and your backlight too...trust me on this). This will get rid of most of the grain. 'Sharpness' is an artificial edge enhancement, which high-def images do not need. Remember, grain is a product of film. Games, animation, video and fully digital images should have no grain at all. If you heed this advice, your picture will be a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Tweeking your tv picture will probably take a couple of viewings or more over several days. But once you have your tv and BD player settings and adjustments dialed in--the picture will be drastically improved. One female reviewer mentioned a 'grainy' picture, and she stated that she was unsatisfied with her set. She needs to use the image adjustments--that's what they are there for. Most tvs look like poopoo out of the box. I went from being slightly disappointed--to downright stoked about my tv image (after adjustments were made, my picture is sweet). For a smallish set, this is one pretty tv (and very inexpensive). I like it so much I plan on buying another one to put in storage, so I can have it on standby in 18 years when I want it. I know that technology will change drastically by then, but I want this set for nostalgia because I think it has A+ looks (hey, I'm shallow). I am sure I will also have a large Panasonic LED tv by then as well. I have had nothing but problems with Samsungs...but I tried. For video products, I will only buy Panasonic...you should too.

Great Tv for the price

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3K64NTCMNETG This video is for Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-L37S1. Somethings that are not in the video:
- I think the audio for the tv is pretty good. I use it sometimes when I forget to turn on my surround. My apartment is small and I sit 6 to 9 feet back. Never had to put the tv pass 50.

- My tv came with a 2 stuck blue pixel and sadly I can't return it. I bought it from a website called homegoodz(don't recommend). The stuck pixels only pop up on black backgrounds but it can get annoying at times. However I can't blame that on the tv or call Panasonic a unreliable brand.

- Forgot to mention the component connection is on the back of the tv.
- Any Lag in the video isn't the tv's fault or the programing's fault.

Awesome Television

I've had this tv for almost two weeks now and have not had any problems with it so far. the picture quality is outstanding when it is connected to hi-def tv channels. standard-definition channels also look great on this television. the tv does have some glare in rooms with windows but does'nt seem to be very problematic at all so don't let that be a reason not to buy it. I have my xbox 360 connected to the tv via hdmi and all games I've played on it look really good. the television has great sound quality so that makes it even more ideal for playing video games as well. if you are looking for a great budget hdtv for playing video games and watching movies in high definition then you should look no further than this panasonic TC -L37S1 HDTV and get one ASAP!
